Seeing and interpreting
Of all the senses, vision may be the most adaptable. What people see is not just what the eye sees but what the brain interprets. Sight is a combination of the physical optics of the eye and how the brain processes that information. In an eye examination there is both an objective measurement and a subjective determination of vision.
Eye glasses are not a commodity. They are a necessity providing for one of the senses. Visual ability is clearly linked to educational and employment opportunities. The World Health Organisation is now committed to give greater attention to the fight against visual impairment and blindness. Eric Rajapakse Opticians recognise the need for intervention to “prevent and reduce disease, disability and death from visual impairment, including blindness” and have taken steps to provide sight for all through Colombo Optical Company. |

History
Caring for your eyes since 1917.

Present Management
The company is managed today by Directors Rajeev Rajapakse and Nadeera Rajapakse.
Having followed Business Studies at Abraham Baldwin College in Georgia, USA, Rajeev Rajapakse brings a fresh, dynamic look to the business. He was trained by his father, Rohan Rajapakse, and since his involvement in 1998 has brought newer designs in both eyewear and outlook. His focus on customers and their needs has added a stronger dimension to the company’s reputation of excellent service.
Nadeera Rajapakse holds a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne) and has transformed the management of the company to a performance-driven, productive and at the same time, ethically-oriented structure. Her professional knowledge in Optometry was acquired through diploma studies at the Varilux University and the Institute Superior of Optics in Paris and initiated by the guidance of Rohan Rajapakse. She has been instrumental in resuming the Eric Rajapakse School of Optometry training programmes, both in house and open to external participants. The optometrists of Eric Rajapakse are thereby trained in the latest refraction and eye examination methods; receive insight to new products in the optical industry and maintain improved standards in optometry.
Managing business with sporting talent and artistic direction
The company is proud of the fact that the director, Rajeev Rajapakse is a nationally ranked tennis player in Sri Lanka and has represented the country in the prestigious Davis Cup event since 1998. The determination, focus and immense talent he displays on the tennis court reflect the qualities he brings to the company.
Eric Rajapakse Opticians are immersed in artistic talent, inspired by Nadeera Rajapakse, who is an accomplished ballet dancer and innovative choreographer. Her creative skills have benefited the company’s image, marketing campaigns and overall outlook. The company is supportive of her artistic creations and sponsored New Directions, Dance 2007, which featured a piece of her work based on women migrant workers and their confrontation of market forces.

Colombo Optical Company

Colombo Optical Company, under the funding of Eric Rajapakse Opticians, provides low cost spectacle frames to all. Former Chairman, Mr. Rohan Rajapakse emphasised the importance of good eyesight in improving one’s lifestyle and wellbeing. He enumerated cases where ignorance and poverty combined to create dismal working and living conditions for people with bad eyesight. “Many people do not know they cannot see properly, and find themselves being blamed for accidents caused by poor vision. Housemaids, cooks, labourers, and factory employees are some of the categories of workers who rarely get their eyes tested and working under such conditions is a huge health and safety risk”. Therefore, making them aware of the quality of their vision is a first step. Subsequently, it is important for them to be able to afford to get corrective spectacles. Colombo Optical Company was formed with such an objective of providing sight to people who can ill afford a pair of spectacles from other optical outlets. “Anyone who walks in should walk out with good vision, regardless of whether they can pay for it or not”. |
